1) Message boards : Number crunching : Why are credits not uppdating? (Message 57019)

My tasks are being processed, but the total credit and recent average credit have remained the same for ages now.

I think that BetelgeuseFive may be correct. I've had several downloads stalled for days now, which repeatedly fail to connect to the server. However the server status page is showing all servers as up and running. Or at least it was. Now I'm not getting any response at all from it.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : No work for Windows? (Message 52952)
Posted 28 Nov 2015 by nedsram-cdl
Post:
It's not just no Windows tasks now. There haven't been any tasks at all available for several days now.

It would be sad if people gave up on CPDN and crunched something else instead. However what people are seeing at the moment is a dead project. My worry is that people will start to vote with their feet - so when tasks are eventually available, fewer people will be interested any more. Is Les seriously suggesting that there will be nothing until Christmas? I hope not. (News and Announcements 2.)

This year is predicted to be the warmest for thousands of years. An understanding of the climate has never been more important.

This question may have been asked before, in which case I apologise.

It's now been about three weeks since any work units were available which will run on Windows PCs. When can we expect some please?
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : Fortran error dialog boxes (Message 52543)
Posted 12 Sep 2015 by nedsram-cdl
Post:
I don't use my laptop much these days, but leave it on 24/7 to number crunch CPDN tasks. Or that was the idea. I decided to check the laptop out this morning, only to find that both tasks had crashed, and each had put up a dialog box and were waiting for me to click on OK. Apparently they had crashed two weeks earlier.

The obvious problem here is that everything grids to a halt until the OK button is clicked, which isn't going to happen if the laptop is unattended.

Is there any way to do away with this pointless message box and just leave the details in the event log?
6) Message boards : Number crunching : My laptop is now a "new" computer (Message 52440)
Posted 18 Aug 2015 by nedsram-cdl
Post:
I certainly didn't make any changes to the BOINC settings, or any hardware changes to the laptop, so I was surprised to find that my Vista laptop was suddenly showing up as a "new" laptop (ID: 1372069), albeit with the same name as the "old" one. Currently running tasks had vanished, and it was now running SETI as well as CPDN. (It had been set to "no new tasks" for SETI for at least six months. I only ever activate SETI when there are problems with CPDN and I can't get any new CPDN tasks.) The only active thing I did around then was fiddle with the power settings, as it had decided to put itself to sleep at regular intervals, even though I had told it never to do this. (It's supposed to crunch CPDN tasks 24/7.)

I'm a bit baffled by this. Has anybody else seen this behaviour? (I merged computers by name, so I don't know what the old ID was, but the name is "BRIAN-LAP". Just my scientific curiosity kicking in. :-)
7) Questions and Answers : Windows : Visual Fortran Run-Time Error (Message 51753)
Posted 3 Apr 2015 by nedsram-cdl
Post:
I've recently been plagued with Fortran run-time errors, but only on my laptop, never on the desktop. (The laptop is Vista x86, whereas the desktop if Windows 7 x64.)

Now I can see why misbehaved models could result in this, but my problem is that the laptop is only used intermittently by me. Its main use is to run CPDN tasks. Just now I checked the laptop to find that one of the tasks had crashed a couple of days ago, and it had been sitting there since then waiting for me to click on OK several times to dismiss the message boxes. By no means the first time this has happened either. I must have lost weeks of work to this problem. Is there any way to disable the message boxes, so that the model crashes and burns silently?

I hadn't used the laptop for some time, and when I unlocked it, I got a succession of fortran runtime error boxes, and five models had apparently crashed all at the same time. (It can only possibly run two models at once, so that in itself is very odd.) The stderr file in each case looked something like this:

Yesterday I looked at tasks apparently running on the laptop (from my desktop) and none had had any trickles reported for several days, nor any claimed or granted credit.

It's an x86 running Vista.

Any idea what is going on here please?

My desktop (windows 7 x64) has reported no such errors, although there is the odd REPLANCA error from time to time.

Yes on looking at stderr for one of them, it is a replanca error. I'll mark this as resolved. (It's a pity they got rid of the other forums. They were much easier to navigate.)

Is there a problem with this particular model? Others seem to run without issue.

At least ten attempted downloads over the last couple of weeks have failed. All report failure due to "Error while downloading". I've appended one such example. As these are flagged as "client error", after a while BOINC is then refused further tasks for the rest of the day due to "too many failed tasks". I have checked the news thread and can see nothing posted about this, which is happening on both my desktop and laptop PCs.

If the worst problem that you have is that you cant get any new work from CP count you blessings. I am writing this on my laptop running on batteries and posting from an open wifi network that I happened to be able to jump on because I nave not had any electrical power since hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of the United States last Monday. The Authorities are saying that not all electrical power will be restored until Nov. 11.

All the food in my refrigerator has spoiled, I am going blind from trying to read by candle light (how did they do that in the old days) and I have no heat because the furnace doesnt work without electricity (it was 37 degrees F last night). This is getting real old, real fast.

So no new work from CP, WUs dont download fully, full servers that make it difficult upload results, no problem!

While it's obviously dreadful what has happened on the eastern seaboard, and you have my sympathy, we still appear to be awaiting an explanation as to why the project has in effect been moribund for some weeks now. Or is the reason hidden somewhere else in a different thread on one of the two message boards? (Why do we need two message boards?)

Every task I have had on my laptop for the last week or so has also failed. The ones I have checked seem to be of the "replanca" variety. However I am unable to obtain any new tasks, so it has been effectively idle for several days now.

Is there a problem with the supply of new tasks - possibly as a result of this issue?

Post:
Many thanks for all the suggestions (while I was in bed). From what people have said, it looks more likely that BOINC is being starved of CPU time than it being a graphics issue. I\'ve just noticed that I have been losing SETI work units in a similar way.

I\'ll make sure in future that she always shuts down BOINC.
19) Questions and Answers : Windows : Incorrect function 0x1 error (Message 28379)
Posted 2 May 2007 by nedsram-cdl
Post:
Error 1 is mostly associated with shutting down too quickly for the modelling program to close all of it\'s files.
This may be because Windows is closed without first Exiting BOINC, or becuause the power is simply turned off with the program running.
And Vista is worse, because fast turn off is one of it\'s touted features.

The only guaranteed way to save the model is:
(Menu) Suspend BOINC,
Wait until it SAYS \"Suspended\", then
(Menu) Exit from BOINC.

Anything less is \"Russian Roulette\".

Thanks for the suggestion, but Windows is not being shut down in this case. When restarting Windows (I never shut it down - it runs 24/7) I had never thought of closing BOINC first, and this has never caused me any problems - so far.

I\'m having this problem on my XP machine. Whenever I let my teenage daughter use IMVU, CPDN usually crashes within about 15 minutes. The following messages are typical:

24/04/2007 19:29:13|climateprediction.net|Unrecoverable error for result hadcm3inct_cl7x_1920_160_05872841_1 (Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1))

24/04/2007 19:29:16|climateprediction.net|Computation for task hadcm3inct_cl7x_1920_160_05872841_1 finished

I now get her to \"snooze\" BOINC while she\'s using it, and since then it hasn\'t crashed (touch wood).

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening please?
