My iMac 2011 running OSX 10.7 (1114220) is currently running 3 tasks, but it doesn't seem to be accumulating credit, and none of the tasks listed for it on the website (including completed ones) are displaying any trickles. According to its event log it is sending trickles normally. My other 2 computers - 1 linux box and a Windows Vista machine - seem to be behaving normally. This is presumably a database anomaly, but is there any way to fix it?

I have just re-installed BOINC after upgrading my iMac 2011 model to OSX Lion. So far I have had 4 models crash within seconds from computation errors. Is there a problem with running BOINC on Lion? I can't find anything in the forums.

The same thing has happened to me on the two computers I have running CPDN - one a Windows 7 machine, and one an iMac. I don't want to be rude, but was this batch of models tested before release?

5) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : i7 iMac CPU settings (Message 42467)
Posted 26 Jun 2011 by dajashby
Post:
I have a 2011 iMac with an i7 Sandy Bridge CPU which will thus run up to 8 BOINC tasks at a time. I'm currently also running another project (no chance of getting 8 tasks out of CPDN at the moment :-)), and I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine (using Parallels). I find that unless I limit the number of CPUs that BOINC can have, the computer runs like a dog. I currently have no of CPUs set to 50% (which means 4 virtual CPUs) in BOINC, and Windows has 1 - I don't know whether that means 1 physical core or 1 virtual one...). Anyone have any suggestions as to the optimum settings to use?

And now I have a second hadcm3n model. Looks like it was my BOINC installation causing the problems.

OK, I have cleared out my BOINC Data folder and reinstalled the BOINC manager, and, somewhat to my surprise, picked up a new hadcm3n model immediately. It has so far run for several minutes without crashing. I'm crossing my fingers.

That computer's task list has a HadAM3P_SAF task crashing with the same error on 26th May and a HadAM3P_EU task completing successfully on 22nd May. The other notable difference between them is that the EU task reported BOINC core client version 6.10.58 and the SAF one reported 6.12.26, so the error could indicate that the upgrade caused problems with the permissions.

I acquired the current computer (iMac with i7 processor) in late May, but made the mistake of migrating the settings from the laprop (Macbook Air) I had been using (I'm new to the Macintosh). The BOINC settings were transferred along with everything else, and although I reinstalled BOINC it may be that I need to clear the whole thing out and start again. The successfully completed tasks were on the laptop. Everything that's run on this machine from CPDM has crashed.

The case where trickles arrived after the model crashed was probably because the same model was being run on both machines, which was a bit stupid of me.

hadcm3n is NOT compatible with CPUs/processors without SSE2 capabilities. That means HADCM3N is NOT compatible with

Pentium 3, Pentium 3 based Celerons and Xeons, and older Intel processors, and
Athlon XP/MP, Athlon XP based Semprons/Durons, and older AMD processors.

A computer with a processor listed above downloading one of these models will result in an immediate crash. This is not expected to change in the future.

geophi, you can add Macintosh computers with Intel's new Sandy Bridge processor to that list. I've now had two of these models crash on my 2011 iMac within seconds of launching - which, given the difficulty of getting any work at all, is pretty frustrating.

The various credits scripts have been taking half a day to run, which slows down the server it's on. A new server has been installed, and the main database, (the server that this board is on, plus other things), has been copied to it. Credits calcs will now be run on this backup server.

Les, you said the credit calculations were being shifted to another server. If you said anything else earlier I missed it, sorry. I didn't intend to join the chorus of criticism, but it's a pity that more stuff can't be decentralised away from Oxford.

There's some irony in the fact that CPDN uses thousands and thousands of computers around the world to run climate models, but grinds to a halt because the central server has to be used to calculate credits. Why can't that work be farmed out?

According to BOINCStats my host 1111857 lost 43,969 credits on 8th March. Thyme Lawn reported in the News & Announcements thread that Jonathan was working to fix these problems, and that was about two weeks ago. How's he going?

The database, servers, credits, etc should now be working.
If you still have missing credits, then now is the time to mention this, so that the temp admin person can fix it.
Thanks.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but that was several days ago. I'm missing about 37,000 credits. How is the hunt for missing credits going?

Since my last visit (6 hours ago), I have set up BOINC on Windows XP with Parallels Desktop on my MacBookPro and it is running CPDN Eu tasks apparently successfully although one of the 2 tasks running is frequently suspended "awaiting memory", but at least something is happening!!!

Keith

Keith, thanks for that excellent idea. I have installed BOINC on the Win 7 virtual machine I have running on my Macbook Air. It's been running for about a day and a half now So far all is well. Parallels is seriously better than any other virtual machine solution I have tried. Maybe I'll convert to Mac!

In that case I should mention that according to BOINCStats I have credit of 7,508,804, wheras Climate Prediction credits me with only 7,477,627. In the last few months BOINStats has usually been a day or two behind CPDN in this regard.

Thanks.
Of the few we've seen so far, most are the same or very close (a few points either way). Very few so far seem to show discrepancies this large.
This probably means everything will have to be switched on and discrepancies pursued later.

This morning those 31 thousand and something points came off my BoincStats total...

By the way, the new temporary sysadmin has finished the database upgrade and is waiting for users to report that their credits are OK before he turns all the daemons back on.

There's some irony in the fact that the day I get to be in position 100 in the Top Participants table, I am in fact totally missing from it - with Neptuno 2000 listed twice in positions 100 and 101.
