(Message 51043) Posted 26 Dec 2014 by MichaelO Post: I am running Norton 360 - and it just tagged the subject file running - hadam3p_afr_sdvc_2013_1_009348474_1.exe - as a "Trojan.Gen.2" - quarantining it. I thought I had exempted the subject file already - hadam3p_afr_7.22_... but that did not seem to stop a recent detection on 12/25/2014 at about 17:31 hours PST. Addendum: I forced another machine with a similar "afr" file to start running it. It appears to have taken the other machine (above) about 16-31 minutes of elapsed time before being flagged by Norton 360 and quarantined. The machine I just forced "afr" to run on is a Windows 8.1 OS using on Windows Defender. I'll see what happens.

I had similar errors earlier this year, but took steps recommended to alleviate them. I thought things were looking good through August (2014). The recent errors seem to appear about 2 September, but I have no explanation except to suggest that was about the time I started having some network issues again. But, I have had worse network issues, so that does not seem to explain the current errors. Thanks in advance for any assistance and/or suggestions.

Les, you are correct about Suspend Work... - I thought I had followed geophi's list of recommended settings. Obviously, I didn't double-check. As for your advice, Eirik, I will plan a time to clean things up, because I am up to 80+GB as of today - 19 Jun (PST). Sorry to have been slow to ask questions about the disk usage before I wasted all those millions of CPU seconds around 14 Jun 2014! But, now I understand what I have been doing wrong. Still, it makes me sad to realize this large loss of work was mostly preventable... Best regards to all!

Again, unless I am way off base in interpreting what I am observing on my machine, I noted that the Disk tab's Disk Usage pie-chart did not drop. Rather, it increased to ~77 GB - about a 2+ GB increase! I'll wait a bit longer to see what is going on and then try deleting files that do not appear in in the Task listing. Thanks for the help!

(It has the name: mjo003). I verified that there are no CPDN tasks listed - active or pending. (I also left the command for Tasks set to "Show active tasks.") So, to summarize what you are telling me - since there are no active or pending CPDN project tasks, all 74 GB of data in the directory - associated with CPDN - can be cleared out. Another question come to mind given what you just had me do -- Could it be that my change in preference settings simply allowed the remaining tasks that were running on this machine to end quickly? I tried to make some heads-or-tails out of recent trickle info, but I am not sure I am interpreting it correctly. Anyway, the disk value has been typical for this machine for quite sometime, which is why I thought it was "normal." So -- I have one last question: Is it easiest to simply try a project "reset" to clean out the directory? I would dislike damaging the directory structure the way I go about wiping folders and disks... Thanks!

(Message 49360) Posted 14 Jun 2014 by MichaelO Post: I just experienced a significant issue with a Windows 7 64-bit machine with my CPDN project seemingly resetting - or maybe more accurately, attempting to restart multiple times - repeatedly. This discussion thread seems to fit closest the issue I encountered, because it appears to have been caused by my recently clearing the Local Preferences. The problem seems to have been caused by clearing the Local Preference settings and restarting BOINC Manager. That was yesterday. This morning, I found that Windows was warning of: 1) low memory; 2) the BOINC Manager trying multiple times to reconnect to a client (I assume CPDN as SETI was still running); and 3) a message that virtual memory (paging) was low. The machine was also clearly unstable. As I tried to investigate via Windows Task Manager, physical memory was full, showing only 1 MB free out of 12 GB physical memory installed. Also, through Advanced Settings, virtual memory was fixed at 512 MB, but Windows was recommending 18 GB (maximum; but 16 MB minimum). I believe I have fixed all these issues. Now, though, BOINC Manager does not list any CPDN tasks. SETI tasks are still present; and the SETI tasks appear to be running okay, too. BOINC Manager shows that CPDN Disk size is over 74 GB, which makes sense, because I had the Local Preference setting set for at least 10 days of work to be stored. First, any ideas why changing the Local Preferences might have caused memory to fill up and - apparently - crash CPDN? Do these events appear related? Second, any suggestions on how to get CPDN tasks restarted? Or, is this a hopeless cause requiring a "project reset?" Again, the Local Preferences have been reset to previous values - and in line with this thread's recommendations, in fact. Thanks for any help in advance!

I like your suggestion of trying to reduce the SETI backlog first; and then attempting to capture a large amount of CPDN work. I will try this more conservative route first. In any case, it will allow me to evaluate how quickly the SETI backlog will be cleared out before proceeding with any transfer attempt as you describe. Best regards, Michael

Yes, these are two of the three running machines which I want to transfer some of the pending work. 2. I am running SETI files on all three machines. I started with SETI; and have continued with it. Specifically, I am looking for a step-by-step, or how-to, procedure, that will allow me to move stored inactive tasks between locally-networked machines so they can be run. I wouldn't have normally considered doing this, except there aren't any new tasks forthcoming; and my team's work units have been dropping off - partly due to my own local machines running out of work. (Message 45998) Posted 20 Apr 2013 by MichaelO Post: I am just following up on a moderator's comment that caught my attention: "...#3,...I find it almost unbelievable that a person can crash over a thousand models and not get onto the forum to ask why..." I'm one of those types of individuals... The "lesson-learned" for me is: I am a hardware guy. I tweak my hardware (via software, of course) to keep things running cool and efficiently; and keep peace in the family. Still, all my "tweaks" just made my statistics drop like a rock. If only I had spent some time perusing the message board weeks ago...to which I want to say - Oh well! - but the reality is, I almost "tweaked" my team off the Top Twenty the way I was dealing with my performance issues. My questions are: 1. What is the "best" method to quickly discern the cause of any CPDN performance issue? I never see any change in my benchmarks after tweaking configurations; and I don't really know how to interpret the messages in the event log. 2. Is there a tool to help estimate how configuration changes will effect performance - if one can assume some typical usage pattern for a specific machine? Such a tool or utility would have likely helped me see that nothing I was doing was improving performance; and thus, maybe, have led me to make inquiries much sooner - like, weeks ago?! 3. Is there a tool/utility for monitoring performance of individual tasks? I currently just scan the "globe," etc. Still, I never tied this to failed tasks; and, it never came to my mind to restart any failed task from a backup if it failed. However, after aborting tasks behaving like those described, one machine I have has not received any further tasks. Is this likely an unrelated issue? I.e., could aborting the tasks with errors 'flag' my machine so the server now ignores it?
