Description | Open to all participants and stakeholders in the CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System) remote sensing mission, whose purpose is to provide highly accurate measurements of both solar-reflected and Earth-emitted radiation from the top of the atmosphere, in particular to help better understand the role of clouds in the Earth's global radiation budget and climatology. The CERES program and Science Team are associated with the Science Directorate at the NASA Langley Research Center, and CERES data products are produced and made available to climate researchers worldwide via the Atmospheric Science Data Center at NASA Langley. The CERES radiometer instruments themselves are designed, built, and calibrated pre-launch by Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (formerly TRW Space & Electronics) in Redondo Beach, CA. The purpose and scientific goals of CERES experiment are in many ways synergistic to those of climateprediction.net -- hence it is fitting that this cpdn CERES team should exist and be open to anyone with an interest in CERES. If that describes you, please consider joining this effort. Welcome! - - - - - NOTE: December 18, 2019, marks the 20th Anniversary of the launch of the EOS Terra Satellite from Vandenberg AFB on 18-Dec-1999. The "proto- flight model" (PFM) CERES instrument was flown on the TRMM satellite, but EOS Terra was the first satellite to carry CERES instruments -- two of them, in fact: Flight Model #1 (FM1) and Flight Model #2 (FM2) -- in a polar orbit providing full-earth coverage. CERES FM1 and FM2 still operate continuously, measuring top-of-atmosphere earth radiation, now 20 years later. - - - - - |
